British sports stars honoured


Britain has awarded its sports stars from the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the New Year's Honours List.

Chris Hoy, cycling triple gold medalist at this years games, got one of the highest accolades when he was knighted for being the first Briton to win three gold medals in 100 years

Hoy was also awarded the BBC's Best Sports Personality of the Year earlier this month.

Sir Chris said it was an honuor.

"It's still sinking in, it's not something you ever expect to happen to you so I am just delighted and it's and amazing way to end the year."


Swimmer Rebecca Adlington received an OBE as she picked up two gold medals in the 400 metre and 800 metre freestyle in Beijing.

Thirteen-year-old paralympic swimmer Eleanor Simmonds was awarded an MBE after she became the youngest Briton to win an individual gold medal at the games.

Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton capped off his fantastic year ! in style when he also got an MBE.

The 23-year-old became the first driver in 12 years to take the Formula One title as Damon Hill last won it in 1996.
